Tips to Pre-Teach English Vocabulary to Young Learners
English language learners face many challenges in reading. The lack of academic vocabulary (words that frequently appear in school texts) can hinder English language learners’ reading comprehension and fluency. This directly affects the amount of academic material they learn in a particular subject. Therefore, it’s essential to pre-teach English vocabulary for them. In pre-teaching vocabulary, the teacher selects key words from a text and teaches them before students read it. Aside from that, learners also need to use ứng dụng học tiếng anh cho trẻ em to help their learning process. Now, let’s discuss on how to pre-teach English vocabulary to young learners.
Pick Essentials Vocabulary
Please read the text and identify key words to help students understand the text before presenting it to them. Students will have difficulty understanding the text if they do not know the meaning of words that frequently appear in the text. The length of the text and the English level of your students will determine the number of words you choose. To avoid overwhelming your students, limit your selection to five or six words.
Do Some Pre-test
After selecting the key words, give your students a short pre-test. This will allow them to test their knowledge of the words. Pre-tests can be matching or multiple choice. If you want to score your pre-tests quickly, keep it simple. Your goal is to find out the extent to which your students can recognize key vocabulary words in the text you read in class. Your students’ results will show you what vocabulary you need to reinforce. You can ask students who did well on the pre-test to take their vocabulary to the next level when they present. We will get to this in a moment.
Set Up a Presentation of Each Word
Prepare a PowerPoint presentation with a slide for each word to help students learn key vocabulary. If you don’t have PowerPoint, create a page for each word in Microsoft Word and display it on a large screen. If you don’t have a computer, you can also make large posters with pens and pictures from magazines or your photos. Remember that illustrations are more effective than photos in presenting new vocabulary.
Make Some Vocabulary Maps
Visual organizers can be an excellent tool for English language learners to learn, retain, and review new vocabulary. Your students can fill in flashcards in journals that have blank pages. The keyword can be written in the center, along with the definition and an illustration. A sentence with the word is also possible. Students with a low level of English can use sentence starters. Higher level students should work with word cards that include a synonym and antonym, part of speech, root with prefix, suffix, root, and prefix. My students take great pride when they see all the new words they have learned throughout the school year in their vocabulary notebooks.
Ask Them to Install English Learning Apps
